I absolutely LOVE your earnest approach to this question; the FabLab is all about the spirit of communal learning!
In turn, I asked a few of our more sewing-experienced students their thoughts on this, and here are our best recommendations:
- Avoid waxed and/or gesso’d canvas as we don’t want the coating to gum up the machine (you can prime your canvas after you've sewn it into your custom shape : )
- Depending on the starting thickness of the canvas material you are working with, you’ll need to carefully plan your joints so that you are only trying to sew through 3 layers max at any point.
 It will also be important to listen to the motor and pay attention to the needle to ensure you are not straining the machine.
 Work slow

Please ask our staff for additional guidance when you come in and follow up to let us know how it goes!
