I absolutely LOVE your earnest approach to this question; the FabLab is all about the spirit of communal learning!
In turn, I asked a few of our more sewing-experienced students their thoughts on this, and here are our best recommendations:
- Avoid waxed and/or gesso’d canvas as we don’t want the coating to gum up the machine ( you can prime your canvas after you've sewn it into your custom shape : )
- Depending on the starting thickness of the canvas material you are working with, you’ll need to carefully plan your joints so that you are only trying to sew through 3 layers max at any point.
It will also be important to listen to the motor and pay attention to the needle to ensure you are not straining the machine.
Please ask our staff for additional guidance when you come in and follow up to let us know how it goes!
