First, here are the methods ArcGIS may be accessed from off-campus.

Faculty teaching courses with GIS content can request 12-month student licenses for all their students. So, students needing software for class projects/research can request their instructor order licenses for them. Second, the book used for many intro to GIS courses on campus, 'Getting to Know ArcGIS', comes with a 6-month student license. If you buy this book, make sure you get a new copy of the book as the single-use installation code may have already been used. Third, anyone can request a 60-day trial license here: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis-for-desktop/free-trial.

Second, if you already have the 12-month student license to install the software on your home computer, a fantastic step-by-step guide to install it can be found here
