Guests and alumni do not have remote access to library databases. To access library databases, guests and alumni must be in the physical library.

  1. I graduated with an MS in 1992 ... just after PCs became reasonably available. I spent many 100s of hours doing research in UTA's libraries while in school. I'm now retired from Engineering and have started a new career in writing and public speaking, which I'm passionate about. I spend most of my time doing research and preparing ... while at home taking care of my bride of 40+ years ... so it is much easier to work from home ... unless I'm speaking. Almost everyone has access to an endless plethora of data on the internet, but I'm finding much of it is unsubstantiated, inaccurate, and or wrong. I trust UTA's library system. Is there any way students and alumni can gain online access to UTA's library systems? If not now, when? It would be helpful. Thank you, From a UTA Fan

  2. Hi Martin, Thanks for your thoughtful comments. UTA students do have remote online access to UTA Libraries databases and subscriptions. You are correct in saying that alumni do not have remote online access. Unfortunately, much of this is outside of the control of UTA Libraries. And it's a complicated answer as to why it's outside our control. Some of our database subscriptions are purchased and paid for directly by UTA Libraries, but many others are purchased through consortium or group buying agreements with UT System or other state library partners to whom UTA Libraries pay for access. This context is important because some database vendors do provide alumni access as part of their subscription contracts -- at an added cost -- but most do not offer this service and contracts specifically limit how and to whom access is granted. When in group negotiations all members of the group have to agree to an add-on like this if it's even available. All that to say, it's a service many libraries would love to provide but added costs and contracts make it prohibitive. The good news is -- alumni and members of the public are welcome to come to UTA's Central Library and access our electronic resources in person. If you cannot make it to UTA, your local public library may offer some of the same or similar database access we have available through those same state library agreements (and, perhaps, remotely). Thanks! John @ UTA Libraries
